I fully believe that a blog is an entrepreneur's best friend. It can help bring in passive income, sell your products, grow a community, and even get you sponsorships. Blogging can be your best friend during the low times and feel like a blood sister during the high points. You will become attached to your blog and it will feel like your baby.
That's why I decided to create a How to Start a Blog post! I think it's high time I made one of these. I've literally never made a How to Start a Blog post. Can you believe that?! I've been blogging for YEARS. Almost decades! Crazy.
I'll have some recommendations for themes and helpful items to keep you on track with your blog launch at the bottom of this post! Let's dive in!
How to Start a Blog for Under $10
1. Find a Reliable Host
First, you'll need to set up a host. I use HostGator, personally, and find them to be fantastic. The Baby plan is most popular, since you can have unlimited domains on one account. You can use my affiliate link to snag your domain and hosting. I'll be using screenshots from their dashboard to show you exact steps since it's what I have.
Unlimited domains means that you can have multiple URLs under one convenient account. Quite honestly, I've never had a bad experience with HostGator the entire time I've been hosting with them.
The customer support is surprisingly "supportive", which is exactly what you would EXPECT from support teams but other websites have lacked a lot in efficient answers, quick responses, and a kind tone. Personally, I enjoy speaking with the HostGator support team each time. My issues are always solved without confusion and quite speedily.
Here are some other benefits of HostGator:
- Unlimited emails
- Unlimited storage
- Weebly website builder (drag + drop)
- Google Adwords + Yahoo/Bing credit
2. Create Your Domain Name
Now! Here's the hard part! You gotta name your blog. Before I throw out a bunch of ways to come up with a unique domain name, please take into consideration any future changes you might be making with your blog or business. For me, it started out just a blog but later, it turned into a business, so I had to change my URL and it was a hassle. Consider what you want now and what it might become later. I have four little tips to help guide you in the URL naming process.

Tips for Naming Your Domain
- Don't try to be cute. Inevitably, you'll want to change from your "cute" name to a more professional, streamlined name later on.
- Choose a .com URL. It's easier to remember. I know, I have a .co, but my .com wasn't available!
- Keep it short! Don't choose something so long people won't be able to remember it.
- Choose a name that really reflects on who YOU are and what you're all about.
Make sure that, as you go through the following prompts in the HostGator domain name purchasing process, you keep the little box checked that protects your Domain Name Privacy. This way your name is protected during your online usage. Super important step!
Next, enter your username and pass! Easy peasy!
Finish the prompts, fill out the billing form, and then press CHECK OUT NOW! You're done! Look at that! You have your first hosting and domain name. Aren't you proud?!
3. Install Wordpress.
HostGator has a fab tutorial on walking you through the steps of installing Wordpress. Once you've followed these steps, you are ALL SET. You can start blogging! If you're a virtual assistant, you might like my post on what to blog about as a virtual assistant.
I hope this tutorial has helped! I just couldn't believe I hadn't done a tutorial on starting a blog yet. Plus, it's for under $10, so you really can't beat that.
